Lose Weight And Gain A Healthier Life

By Miya Miles, Our April/May 2012 cover model
PUBLISHER’S NOTE: When I did the photo shoot for our April/May 2012 cover it wasn’t hard to find the energy, enthusiasm, and smile we wanted. Miya Miles, wasn’t just looking great and having fun. She has lost weight --- a lot of weight and now she is celebrating a healthier life. I’m pleased to bring Miya’s story to you because she is a beautiful example of how making connections between a fitness lifestyle and the Christian faith is simple and amazing. She is the “biggest loser” in this issue. Next read about our “heavy gainer” cover model Quentin Randolph.

After five years of medically supervised weight management programs, I was feeling defeated. I began to question my faith and my relationship with God because I wondered why I was working so hard and not receiving any results.

My doctor knew that I was getting frustrated and she suggested a procedure that she was totally against, Gastric Bypass. She was reluctant because she thought that diet and exercise should be all that you need to lose weight. She knew a nutritionist was monitoring me and that I was dieting and exercising but not achieving the desired results. She told me that she normally does not suggest surgery as a method to lose weight but she knew that I was trying and it was the only thing left to do.

Like several American families dealing with unhealthy weight and poor eating habits I was borderline diabetic and with two type-2 diabetic parents. It was imperative that I lose some weight. I told her that I was placing the decision in God's hands. I knew that God would direct my journey to a healthier me!
I was very calm the day of my surgery because I knew that I had prayers being sent up from family and friends. I was at peace with my decision. My relationship with God was so strong. I knew that my day had come for me to start living again. This would be the beginning of a healthier life for me. I prayed as they wheeled me into the operating room, I knew that I would be okay.

My surgery was very successful. I managed to lose 150 pounds in the first year and have managed to maintain my current weight of 155 pounds for the last seven years. It is still a challenge.

Surgery alone is not a solution. Maintenance is just as important. I do not eat the way that I use to. I eat foods that are healthier and different from my past. I like to walk on the beach because it gives me time alone to reflect and pray while I am getting some exercise.

Now I can do things like volunteer at a church car wash more easily and much better than I could before. I believe that I went through this journey so that I can help others. I believe that my experience was hard so that I could share my story of how I have made it to a healthier life. It is a life that has led to a healthier relationship with God as well.
